Fractal geometry in a sunflower

I was staring into the heart of this beautiful sunflower that I harvested this afternoon and noticed a wonderful pattern that seem so elegant and simple, made up of endless loops of smooth curves that end in the edges as teardrops no matter where you start looking. Then this evening's Nova feature documentary (Hunting the Hidden Dimension) showcased the power of fractal geometry in helping us understand how the complexity of plants and forms in nature can really be explained using a few simple mathematical rules. Self-similarity, repetition, endless loops lead a simple local pattern into ever more complex patterns and ultimately culminate into beautiful designs in nature. Definitely a new way to look at the bizarre but amazing beauty in botanicals. How fascinating!
