Last of the tulips
The various tulips that I planted from BulbsDirect and at a bulb sale in the Cylburn Arboretum were great successes this season. These are the last of tulips that were late bloomers and helped extend the potted display on the patio. The Maureen tulips have large single blooms on long stalks; I really liked the elegance and simplicity of this cultivar and will definitely plant more for the next season. The Queen of the Night, in contrast, has an air of mystery to it with deep purple petals and a slight reflective sheen on smaller blooms. There is no wonder the Dutch fell head over heels during the tulip mania in the 17th-century, captivated (and bankrupted) by these hybrid marvels. They are simply irresistible!
