Tomato harvest

A lone tomato plant started sprouting on one side of the backyard this spring, probably seeded by a bird or squirrel picking through the compost pile. Over the summer, this rogue tomato plant grew, and grew, and then grew some more. At one point, it spread over half of the 15-foot fence and got so heavy that branches were falling over themselves.

What was surprising was this tomato plant was growing in really poor soil that was in the ground and yet produced a bounty of juicy-looking tomatoes. Even more surprising, after clipping off almost half of the plant to tidy up the yard, more flowers bloomed and produced plump tomatoes afterwards.

Unfortunately, they are not edible because the I have no idea what was dumped into the soil during the construction of the house. So, they'll go to either the refuse bin or the compost pile. The good news is, now I know the exact sunny spot in the yard to place a large potted tomato plant next year.
